Seeds of Wisdom
13-Week Email Course

Week 11 — Darkness

November 29, 2020

Today we enter Week 11 of the Seeds of Wisdom email course.

Take a moment to complete with last week’s theme of Rebirth, and prepare to welcome the wisdom of Darkness, an energy that is very aligned with the longer nights of the season.

Darkness is one of 12 essential themes for guidance and growth in my book and deck, Seeds of Wisdom. Let’s use our established rhythm for exploring each week’s theme: readreflectrespond… Four possible practices are included for embracing the power of Darkness.

Use your journal or this printable workbook to record your encounters with this wisdom theme: http://EastlyCreative.com/s/DarknessWorkbook.pdf

What is your relationship with Darkness?

Take a moment to simply gaze at the image of Darkness below and see what impressions arise. Then read through a brief description of the theme.

Read…

a brief excerpt on the theme

All things emerge from darkness. Into the darkness, light was born.

Nature’s glory includes both Darkness and Light, both day and night. The night hosts our rest and our dreams. The darkness of winter gives seeds a chance to incubate, plant life time to regenerate.

Whereas light is life, darkness is the perpetual background of life. Light is information and insight. Darkness is intuition. Darkness is the womb, the water, the mystery.

The theme of Darkness invites you to know yourself. Get comfortable with your own Shadow. What is hidden will be revealed.

Replace fear with curiosity, and follow your intuition. Your wisdom is deepening.

Keywords for Darkness

the Shadow; self-discovery; power; depth
healing; subconscious; beckoning to explore

Reflect…

in meditation and in writing

Digest with what you’ve taken in — the image and the words. What connections come together inside you? Are there certain lines of text or keywords that stand out to you?

Reflect — in meditation and in writing — on your personal understanding of Darkness. What does Darkness mean to you?

Make this a sacred process for yourself. How does Darkness call you to prepare for 5 minutes of meditation and 5 minutes of writing?

Respond…

by placing symbols on your altar

What objects do you have or can you create that symbolize your understanding of Darkness?

An image of a starry night sky? A black gemstone? The depth of velvet? Rich, nourishing soil?

If you have the Seeds of Wisdom cards, you may want to place the Darkness card on your altar. If you don’t have the cards, you are welcome to print the image above and use that.

Over the next week, let yourself pause at your altar frequently and discover how the theme of Darkness reveals its wisdom for you.

Possible Practices

for exploring the theme

Here are some possible practices for exploring the theme of Darkness. Keep in mind, these are optional! It’s entirely up to you how much time and space you want to dedicate to this process:

  • Practice 1 — Embrace the Darkness
Spend some time in darkness. Not sleeping, nor specifically meditating — just being. What’s it like to be in the dark?

  • Practice 2 — Honor Your Night Dreams
Pay attention to your night dreams. Record them in a dream journal. If you are already practice dreamwork, choose a dream and “work” it.

  • Practice 3 — Unpack Your Understanding
Free associate in your journal around the topic of darkness. What were you programmed to believe about darkness? How have these beliefs influenced you? What would a fresh relationship with darkness look like?

  • Practice 4 — Get to Know Your Shadow
What part(s) of yourself have you been encouraged to disown? In loose terms, these parts comprise your “Shadow.” Choose one aspect of your “Shadow” to explore through visual art or writing.

Completion

toward the end of next week

Let your process with Darkness come to a close as you approach the end of next week.

Be sure to take notes on your experience with the theme. Take a photo of your altar if you like.

Next Sunday you will receive an email introducing the next theme. Be sure to clear your altar to mark your completion with the theme of Darkness.

May your process with Darkness strengthen your connection with your inner depths.
